How Heat Pump Rebates Work

Heat Pump Rebates in Victoria: What You Need to Know

You’ve probably heard that installing a heat pump can get you a rebate — but how does it actually work?

Here’s a simple guide to the VEU program, STCs, and what they mean for your wallet.

Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)

  • Available to eligible Victorian households

  • Applies to upgrading from electric/gas to heat pump

  • Rebate is applied upfront (we do it for you)

  • Amount varies depending on system, provider, and location

STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates)

  • Federal incentive that applies to most heat pumps

  • Value depends on zone and system capacity

  • Can be claimed alongside VEU (no double handling)

What You Need to Qualify for Heat Pump Rebates

Getting a rebate on your new heat pump system can save you hundreds — but there are a few key boxes to tick first. Here's what you need to know before applying:

🏠 Property Requirements

  • Your property must be located in Victoria

  • It must be an existing home (not a new build)

  • The home should be at least 2 years old

  • Property value must be under $3 million

👤 Homeowner Requirements

  • You must be the owner, or have written permission from the owner

  • You must live at the property (owner-occupier)

  • Your combined household income must be less than $210,000 per year

  • Your home must not have already claimed a Solar Victoria rebate for a battery or hot water system

🔧 System & Installer Requirements

  • Your current hot water system must be at least 3 years old

  • The replacement unit must be an approved product listed on the Solar Victoria register

  • The system must be installed by a licensed plumber registered with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA)
