What to Expect During Your Heat Pump Installation

The Heat Pump Installation Process — What Happens and What You Need to Know

Thinking about switching to a heat pump? Whether you're replacing an old system, upgrading from gas, or building new — here’s what’s involved in the installation process, step by step.

Every Job Starts With a Site Assessment

We’ll either visit your property or review plans/photos to understand:

  • What system you're replacing (gas, electric, solar, etc.)

  • Your daily hot water usage

  • Site layout and access

  • Location of the switchboard and any nearby GPOs (general power outlets)

This helps us recommend the right unit and plan a clean install.

Installing on an Existing Home (System Upgrade)

If you’re replacing an old electric or gas hot water unit:

  • We’ll disconnect and remove the old system

  • The new heat pump is installed in the same or nearby location (usually outdoors)

  • We’ll check for a nearby GPO — if one’s not available, we may need an electrician to install a dedicated outlet

  • Pipework is connected, system is pressure-tested and run through

Most jobs are completed in one day. You’ll be back in hot water by evening.

Installing on a New Build or Renovation

Working from plans? We’ll coordinate with your builder or plumber:

  • Choose the right system early to plan for space and power access

  • Allow for pipework routing and system placement

  • Recommend a dedicated outdoor GPO (most heat pumps require one)

  • Ensure hot water delivery is efficient throughout the home

Replacing a Gas System

Swapping from gas? Good move — here’s what we do:

  • Decommission and cap the old gas unit safely

  • Install the heat pump in the same location or nearby

  • Reconnect pipework and check flow

  • Test and commission the system

Important: Some homes may need minor electrical upgrades if no GPO is nearby — we’ll let you know upfront.

What You Need to Prepare

  • Clear access to the install location

  • Ensure someone’s home during install

  • Access to switchboard if needed

  • Confirm power outlet location (we’ll help assess this)

Installing a heat pump is a straightforward process — and we make it even easier by handling everything from start to finish, including old system removal and rebate paperwork.
