I'm thinking of extending my heating system, what do I need to consider?

The main thing to confirm is whether or not the heater underpinning your system will be able to cater for the extra load, as if it doesn't then you may also need to consider upgrading it to something larger.For example, if you have a hydronic heating system with a 30kW heater and a collective panel heat output capacity of 30kW and you add a few more panels. Your new required heat output capacity naturally increases though your current heater will not be able to accommodate. So all your existing panels will be a little colder than they used to be, which may not be ideal.
